Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start?
Plans, Space, Tools, Knowledge, and (of course) Cash are the basic requirements to get started. Come visit Hangar 41 on a Saturday morning and talk to someone who's already done it.
How long does it take?
Single-seat aircraft typically require 2,000 to 5,000 hours. One of our members spent 22 years on his — life happens. Plan for years, not months.
What types can I build?
Members have built everything from ultralights to bush planes — single-seat designs all the way up to larger multi-seat aircraft.
What resources are needed?
Plans, a clean indoor space, hand & power tools, knowledge (we'll help), and budget. RAA Toronto's hangar, shop, and tool library cover the middle three.
How much will it cost?
Projects start around $20,000 for single-seaters, escalating to over $100,000 for four-seaters — versus certified aircraft exceeding $250,000.
What about engines?
Most homebuilts use aircraft engines (Lycoming, Continental, Rotax, Jabiru). Some builders convert automotive engines — VW, Subaru, Mazda, Chevrolet — to reduce costs.
What is RAA Toronto?
The Toronto chapter of the Recreational Aircraft Association — approximately 100 enthusiasts who meet monthly at Hangar 41, Brampton Airport. We promote homebuilt aircraft construction and host gatherings the first Monday of every month at 7:30 PM.
